Vlad the Impaler: The Real Count Dracula

Author: Enid A Goldberg & Norman Itzkowitz
ISBN: 0531138984
Publisher: Scholastic, 2009
Age: 9-12
Series: A Wicked History
Genre: Non-fiction

Summary: The brutal story of the real Count Dracula from his birth as the second son of the ruling house of Wallachia, to his revenge and brutality to his subjects, to his death.  Vlad Dracula, or “Little Devil”, spent his life trying to gain or retain power in his country of Wallachia after his father and older brother were killed by the Boyars early in his life.  His most well known act of brutality, the impaling of (reportedly) 200 people, was his revenge against those very Boyars that killed his father and brother, and earned him the name Vlad the Impaler.   Shared within these pages are many of the small details of the life of Bram Stoker’s inspiration.

Read A-likes: Genghis Khan: 13th Century Mongolian Tyrant; Hannibal: Rome’s Worst Nightmare; Ivan the Terrible: Tsar of Death; Attila the Hun: Leader of the Barbarian Hordes; and Henry VIII: Royal Beheader.

Personal Thoughts: These books are fabulous for young boys.  They are non-fiction, but read like fiction and give a brief but detailed and interesting look into history.  This series was suggested to me by a youth librarian as a popular non-fiction series for young boys.  Most of the subjects are well known villains throughout history.  This book gives a good and interesting glimpse into the life of one of literature’s and films most famous villains.
